The secrets of the Deep South rise to the surface…

He wrenches at the chains on his wrists and ankles—to no avail. Tears stream down his cheeks as his captor comes at him all dressed in black, chanting and mumbling incoherently, a large knife in his hands…

When multiple body parts are recovered from the Little Ogeechee River in Savannah, Georgia, local law enforcement calls in the FBI. Special Agent Brandon Fisher and his team with the Behavioral Analysis Unit set out to investigate, but with the remains pointing to three separate victims, this isn’t going to be an open-and-shut case.

With no quick means of identifying the deceased, building a profile of this serial killer is more challenging than usual. Why are these victims being selected? Where are they are targeted? Why are their limbs being severed and their bodies mutilated?

The questions compound as the body count continues to rise, and when a torso painted blue and missing its heart is found, the case takes an even darker turn. The FBI will need to convince the Deep South to give up her secrets if they’re going to catch the killer. After all, one thing is clear: the killing isn’t going to stop until they figure it all out. And they are running out of time…

Editorial Reviews for Remnants

“Arnold has created a gritty nightmare of a tale that will churn the stomachs of even the most hard-boiled of FBI agents… Full of grit, gore and enough twists to make even the most diligent of readers hard-pressed to discover the villain, even the ending will keep you on pins and needles.”

Tome Tender Book Blog

“Carolyn Arnold’s literary versatility was extremely clear, and I loved the sense of dramatic irony that got me anxiously flipping pages, wanting to know more…

“The characters were extremely complex, and I was able to see how the story extended far beyond the crime they were trying to solve. Each character had a personality, a history, and a unique voice. Even the antagonists were multifaceted, and the author’s ability to delve into each character’s psychology allowed the story to feel that much more immersive.

“This was definitely enthralling from beginning to end. The plot continued to get thicker and thicker, and I couldn’t put the book down. I would definitely recommend this book for anyone who likes reading crime stories. Carolyn Arnold has written a thrilling mystery that will keep readers on their toes as they delve into the center of a captivating psychological nightmare.”

Ethereal Pages

“I haven’t had the pleasure of reading any of the previous books in the Brandon Fisher FBI Series so I was a bit worried that I would find this book confusing without that background knowledge, but you can rest assured that I didn’t have any issues with following along with the story. Feel free to jump in the series at this point because Remnants is a stand-alone thrilling profiler mystery that you will want to read.

“If, like me, you’re a fan of profiler stories with dark psychological stories that do not hold back on the gore, this is the book for you. Arnold is descriptive and paints a visceral picture that may leave you feeling a bit uncomfortable but the twists and turns will have you begging for more. The unique part about the story is how the mystery is told through two narrative perspectives, that of Brandon and the killer. It is obvious from the standard of writing that Arnold is a maestro at crime thrillers. The flow of the story, the engaging characters whom she spends just as much time building up a background and personality for, and the thrill of the crime all add up to a story you can’t put down nor do you want to. I’ll be reading more from Arnold. I’m definitely hooked.”

Crystal’s Many Reviewers

“I’m a fan of murder mysteries. Give me a twisted serial killer and a case not easily solved, along with many suspects, and I’m lost in the story until the end.

“This case reminded me of episodes from the TV show Criminal Minds. The killings are gruesome. The FBI team works as a well-oiled machine. And who the victims are and why the killer is murdering them is so out there. Carolyn Arnold leads you into a very dark place, teasing you with lots of clues and false trails, until the final reveal. What a finish!

“While this is the [6th] book in the series, each one stands on its own so you won’t have a problem jumping in anywhere. Always a bonus for me. And the author doesn’t leave you hanging, filling in past events where needed without slowing down the story.

“Remnants will have you flipping the pages to find the identity of the killer, keeping you engaged and wanting right up to the end.”

Fuonlyknew

“If you’re a fan of the Criminal Minds TV show, you are going to LOVE this book from the start! A psychological thriller that dives right into the heart of an FBI investigation into an active serial killer. You’ll find yourself cheering for the FBI team and trying to figure out who the gruesome killer is. Fast paced and tantalizing, a perfect read for a stormy night.”

The Faerie Review

“There is nothing worse than not starting a series with the first book. Nothing. I am always wary when publishers tell me that I can read their books as a standalone. To be honest, it was for that reason that I was not expecting to enjoy Remnants as much as I could have. I was pretty happy to be wrong. This is definitely a standalone novel, even though it is the sixth installment in the series!

“I LOVED Brandon Fisher! He is definitely a character that warmed my heart and opened my eyes a bit to more of humanity… Not only did I watch the amazingly well-written development of Brandon Fisher, but of the rest of his team. Arnold’s use of character development definitely helped her to grow this novel from only a procedural book to a true journey filled with real people.

“I also loved that her mystery was not easy to solve. Sometimes, books can be far too predictable. I spent the entire flipping book thinking, “Oh! It has to be this guy!” But then it wasn’t. So, I’d find another character. “It’s him this time! I’m right! I have to be.” And, I wasn’t. There was no way I could have seen that conclusion. But, when I thought back to the plot and all of the descriptions, it made total sense. I love that Arnold made the intelligent effort to put herself into the minds of her audience to best lead them astray.

“I am having a hard time critiquing this novel. I WILL be reading the entire series (in order, of course) and I WILL make sure that I have a copy of each. Brandon Fisher is the Bones of the average man, or woman, and I look forward to enjoying the entirety of his saga.”

Ms. J Mentions

“This book was amazing. It was gripping and intriguing from the beginning! Although I have not yet read the other books in the series, it works well as a stand-alone book. However, I will definitely be reading the other books in the series soon because the characters are incredible!

“The plot of this book was brilliant. The author went into a lot of detail about the plot and story which was amazing. The mystery was done really well, and I found it very hard to figure out who the killer was. I was shocked when I found out who it was at the end of the book… this story was brilliant.

“At some points while reading the book I felt more like I was watching a movie or TV show than reading which made for a great experience.

Although I have not read many mystery/crime books, this has made me want to read more books like it because the writing, plot and characters were all incredible”

Dual Reads

“Do you like Criminal Minds? Well then, look no further. This is Criminal Minds in its novelized version. I was so strongly reminded of the show that I could have finished the review with that single sentence above and I would be justified. Just like that show, this book will keep you on the edge of your seat while reading and make you heave a sigh of relief when it’s done.”

Overrated Sensibilities

“High-octane police procedural… In this novel, the sixth in the Brandon Fisher FBI series, the story is complex and intriguing… There is plenty of action, clues to follow, puzzles to be solved, and an interesting explanation behind the crimes… The book is easy to read, a page-turner and difficult to put down… In sum, a solid police procedural novel, well researched and constructed, for those who love complex stories and who don’t mind gory details.”

Just Olga

“A book that is character driven and [such] a believable plot, you have to wonder if this was based on a real case. It is that real. The author conveys a talent for police procedurals and is able to keep the reader enthralled in the story.

“Like I said, this is the 6th book in the series, and the only one I have read in this series, but it can be read as a stand alone novel. I personally will be going back and reading more of this series. If you love a good police murder mystery, this is an author that you really need to take a look at. I thoroughly enjoyed this book and it was a fast read for me.”

Celticlady’s Reviews

“Readers will find in Remnants an action-packed suspenseful crime novel… Filled with nonstop action, FBI and police procedures, Remnants will grab the reader immediately. Setting the hook in the first few pages, Arnold holds the reader in the palm of her hand as she crafts an intense thriller. With twists and turns and excellent plotting, Arnold holds the reader’s attention.

“Arnold descriptive prose was skillful and the story-line original. Arnold’s imagination was in full force in Remnants; who would have thought of the reason behind the kills except someone with a vivid imagination. Reader also sees the story from the killer’s perspective which greatly intensified the suspense in this story.

“I felt I was watching an episode of Criminal Minds or CSI; the story felt realistic. I felt the characters were full-bodied and the police procedures accurate. Finally, in concluding my thriller suspense novel review of Remnants, I found a story which will keep you up at night. It is intense, realistic, and relates to our world today as serial killers become more prolific. I love a good crime novel and this book fits the bill.”

Vera’s Book Reviews and Stuff

“The method of killing and the torture that ensues is gruesome and hair-raising to say the least. I found it very difficult to put this book down once I started reading. A very good story for anyone who enjoys a good murder-mystery/horror story.”

Reviews by Karen

“I love thrillers, suspense, murder and serial killers, not necessarily in that order. LOL

Remnants by Carolyn Arnold has them all… Step by step, clue by clue, law enforcement follows the path to the unsub in a Criminal Minds fashion… I didn’t put all the pieces together until the last part of the book, and it was Carolyn Arnold that took me there. I love that I [couldn’t] figure it out early… I love these kinds of stories and would highly recommend following this standalone series.”

Fundinmental

“WOW!! And again wow. I thoroughly enjoyed this gritty, psychological, twisted thriller. I hadn’t read this author before, but I really must read more!!

“Quite often the blurb builds a book but carrying it off throughout a novel it is more difficult and some lose their direction. This one? No way. It stayed on track and hauled you along for all the gore of the ride. If you think this means a horror, it’s not but it’s dark, and takes you inside the minds of some very twisted people. I couldn’t have enjoyed this more.

“I love the characters and how they gel together. Particularly Brandon and how he decides to deal with things around him, while trying to retain his own humanity.

“Love it and must read more!!

Archaeolibrarian

“Okay, so this is a new author to me, and all I can say right now is, how in the name of all that’s holy have I lived without these books in my life? Like, seriously. It has all of my favorite things. That sounds creepy but, alas, it’s true. Mystery, suspense and a serial killer. It’s a winner in my book.

“This is the 6th book in this series but it can be read as a standalone. If you like Bones and/or Criminal Minds, you will LOVE, LOVE, LOVE this book!

“It’s one crazy ride and the story literally rolls out into a story that you can’t put down. Now I look forward to getting the other books and emerging myself into this crazy world!”

Paging Through The Days Blog

“Carolyn Arnold is my top go-to for a good ‘who done it’ mystery read and you won’t be disappointed!”

Leels Loves Books

Remnants gripped me right away and was exciting through the very last page. The characters are one of my favorite parts of this series. Well-developed characters + adrenaline-filled investigations + well-plotted mystery = an excellent read.

Remnants by Carolyn Arnold is one of those books that I didn’t want to end. Though I did want it to end, so I could find out who was the killer. I would love to see the Brandon Fisher FBI series books turned into a TV show or movie. If you enjoy shows on Investigation Discovery, or TV shows like Criminal Minds, then you will thoroughly enjoy this series as well.”

Brooke Blogs

“This book was fast paced from page one. It had me sucked in and I hated putting it down. It’s number six in a series and is the first book I have read. Even though it was a part of a series, it was easily read as a stand alone. I really enjoyed it and even hope to read more in the future. The characters were real and easy to like, while some were easy to hate. The story was detailed and descriptive and kept me guessing until the end. This book was a great crime mystery.”

Boundless Book Reviews

“This is my first time reading anything by this author. This book started out strong and ended just as strong…

“The author made sure that the killer’s time in the spotlight was not lessened by the storyline. I have read many books where sometimes the killer is overshadowed by the storyline or the killer comes off as weaker so that it appears that the people brought to stop the killer seem smart. No, this was not the case in this book. Every character had a purpose. Although, the killings were horrific with limbs severed, the details were not graphic in nature. Therefore, those readers who like murder mystery or police procedural books, you will be happy with this factor. One more aspect that I wanted to point out about this book is that the flow was steady with no down time.

“If you are looking for a new author to try than you should check out this book. Coming from a fan of murder mystery or police procedural books; Remnants is a worthy read with sharp, skilled characters and a strong storyline.”

Cheryl’s Book Nook

Remnants, is a thrilling book, full of twists and turns… The plot has that gripping intensity to it, and is most certainly a page-turner. I needed to find out who the culprit was, and what made him/her tick…. I thoroughly enjoyed the book from the first word to the last. It is the sixth book in the Brandon Fisher series, but I presume that they can all be read as stand-alone books, as I had no problem understanding the story, nor Brandon.

“With such in-depth character developments, a flawless, well-researched plot, and a storyline that holds you to its pages, you can tell that this has been written by an accomplished crime writer.

“Now all that’s left to do, is to read the other five. Here’s hoping that they are as superb as this one.”

Whispering Stories

“A very dark read but certainly gripping.”

Yet another blogging mummy!

“As body parts start to float down river it’s up to FBI agent/profiler Brandon Fisher to sort it all out and track down the person behind it all. Problem is there aren’t all that many clues. The trail is cold, intense and then BAM!

“It’s one crazy ride and the story literally rolls out into a story that you can’t put down. Now I look forward to getting the other books and emerging myself into this crazy world!”

–Paging Through the Days

“The perfect thriller to keep you up at night… Please do yourself a favor, and put Remnants on your TBR list… As any good thriller should be… Remnants is a part of a series [but] can be read as a standalone.

“And let’s talk about that storytelling. I found Arnold’s writing to be not only engaging, but [it painted] a picture for the reader. There was never I time I felt as though she were talking over my head. All of the details were well researched. For me, I do believe that Carolyn Arnold is an up and coming author for the thriller genre.”

Quitterstrip

“Gripping & Intriguing! Carolyn Arnold is a new author for me, and she didn’t disappoint with Remnants, the sixth book of her Brandon Fisher FBI series… Even if it’s part of a series, Remnants can be read as a stand-alone book. The fast pace, great action, and this author’s writing style, makes this thriller very suspenseful. She wrote the plot well and slowly built a suspense that pulls you right into the action. It will keep you sitting on the edge of your seat and grab your attention from the first page until the very end.

“If you’re a fan of TV shows like CSI and Criminal Minds, then you’ll like Remnants. Beware, you won’t be able to put it down, or just read fast enough to know what will happen next.”

Books and Benches

“The author gives you just enough info to keep you hanging on trying to figure out whodunnit and then when you least expect it she slams you in the face with it and you’re like ‘oh I didn’t see that one.’

“She also makes the characters seem like real people someone you would like to be friends with and get to know. She knows how to make the story seem so real and believable and [makes you hope] that the killer doesn’t decide to end up in your neighborhood.

“This is the first book by author Carolyn Arnold that I have read and I hope it won’t be the last. I can’t wait to read more about Brandon’s cases and to see more of Brandon and his team. If you love a good thriller then you are going to love Remnants and Brandon Fisher of course.”

The Avid Reader

“Arnold is one of those author’s whose series I would follow if I were not involved with book reviews and blogging. So I’ve missed a couple of books in this series, but this is definitely a stand-alone crime novel and I can say immediately that I recommend it for your consideration!

“While Arnold writes in different genres, it is well-known that she is an expert in writing police-procedural novels. This is no exception and due to the complexity of the evil acts that are occurring, the need for meticulous, detailed activities are a must. So even while readers are gathering details along the investigation, I have to admit that I hadn’t a clue about who was doing what!

“And there’s a reason for that… the clever manipulation of the author’s mind in setting up the story is incredible. Indeed, I hope that no real criminal out there is capable of putting together a plot that is so unbreakable that readers must wait until the end to even get an inkling of what is actually going on! Kudos to Carolyn Arnold! Nothing I like more than a book that keeps me in suspense through page after page…

“The psychological suspense is deep…and…wide in this story. Sure you may think you have a psychopath out there somewhere… But the who, what, where, and why are the key elements that cannot be explained. And what readers discover at the end is outrageous, overwhelming, and downright haunting… Whew! The only thing that keeps this from being a horror novel is that readers are so involved in trying to solve the case along the way to really begin to grasp the hidden horror story behind the scenes…

Arnold has outdone herself in this novel; she has placed readers behind the yellow crime scene tape; placed a badge on our chests, and begs us to see if we can unravel the mystery… If you enjoy thrillers, mysteries, suspense, as well as police procedural stories, then you just must check this out. You might be as stunned as I was in this surprisingly almost unbelievable tale of…human depravity…

GABixlerReviews

“This is the first book I’ve read by Carolyn Arnold but it won’t be the last. Remnants is the sixth book in the Brandon Fisher FBI Series and it stands on its own but I’m looking forward to reading the first five…. If you like murder mysteries and/or if you like the TV show Criminal Minds, you should like Remnants.”

Bound 4 Escape

“What’s really great about this book is that it is part of a series, in fact it is the 6th book… but like a little glorious present, it stands alone… so that the reader doesn’t feel like they’ve missed out on anything if they haven’t read any of the series up until this point…

“I found that Carolyn’s writing was not only engaging, but easily painted a picture for the reader. There was never a time that I felt as though she was talking about things that were over my head, the use of the proper terminology when it came to forensics etc. just made it that more real and believable…

“I thought at several points that I had it all worked out, that I truly knew who the murderer was but in the end, I was off by miles because I definitely didn’t see the twists and turns coming. You’re constantly on edge wondering what’s next. Its full of grit and gore and the end will satisfy you.

“An easy 5/5 from me and I look forward to picking up and seeing more of Carolyn’s work and I’ll definitely be watching out for her name on the top list of the Crime/Thriller/Mystery list in the near future.”

A Books Eternal Glory

Remnants is a tense, and at times gruesome, procedural novel… Switching back and forth between the team and the killer, this is a swift moving thriller that will keep you guessing. Fans of police procedural novels or criminal investigation shows on TV should enjoy this one… This is book 6 in the series, but you can read it without having read the previous books.”

The Book’s The Thing

“It’s a fun, action packed adventure, with some decent twists and a great pace… It [was] easy to get into the plot and race along with the characters to try and catch the killer. Arnold doesn’t get too bogged down in details or descriptions, rather focusing on the investigation and what the FBI are learning.

“You know all those books that you were told read fine as a standalone, despite being part of a series, but you were completely lost? Yeah, this is not one of those books. I’ve not read any other books in the Brandon Fisher series, but I had no issue getting into this… I liked how Arnold handled the changing points of view. Brandon’s was in first person, while the killer’s and his coworkers were in third, which could have be awful. But it was actually very easy to follow, and filled in the details of the story wonderfully. Authors writing from multiple points of view could learn something from Arnold.

“If you’re a fan of Criminal Minds, Ian Rankin, CSI, or crime or thriller books as a general, this one might be worth checking out.”

Songs Wrote My Story

“Many chapters actually alternate between the FBI agents and the killer’s actions and perspective. You really get the feeling you [are entering] into the killer’s psychology… I’m not going to reveal more about the mystery. It is well built, with plenty of possible leads and red-herrings to keep you guessing for a while, and lots of suspense…

“What I really appreciated was all the procedural aspects of the work: you have the four agents on the Behavioral Analysis Unit, plus an anthropologist, the chief medical examiner at the morgue, a super smart analyst, and a few extra detectives. It was neat to see them brainstorm together, each helping to solve the case. Apart from the main heroes/anti-heroes, there are also plenty of colorful characters, weirdos, and very sick people.

“VERDICT: Suspenseful thriller set in Georgia. Great if you are into procedural mysteries and ready for some creepy scenes.”

“I love thrillers, suspense, murder and serial killers, not necessarily in that order. LOL

Remnants by Carolyn Arnold has them all… Step by step, clue by clue, law enforcement follows the path to the unsub in a Criminal Minds fashion… I didn’t put all the pieces together until the last part of the book, and it was Carolyn Arnold that took me there. I love that I [couldn’t] figure it out early… I love these kinds of stories and would highly recommend following this standalone series.”

Fundinmental

“This is the first book I’ve read by Carolyn Arnold but it won’t be the last. Remnants is the sixth book in the Brandon Fisher FBI Series and it stands on its own but I’m looking forward to reading the first five…. If you like murder mysteries and/or if you like the TV show Criminal Minds, you should like Remnants.”

Bound 4 Escape

“Carolyn Arnold is my top go-to for a good ‘who done it’ mystery read and you won’t be disappointed!”

Leels Loves Books

Dual Reads

Remnants is a tense, and at times gruesome, procedural novel… Switching back and forth between the team and the killer, this is a swift moving thriller that will keep you guessing. Fans of police procedural novels or criminal investigation shows on TV should enjoy this one… This is book 6 in the series, but you can read it without having read the previous books.”

The Book’s The Thing

“Do you like Criminal Minds? Well then, look no further. This is Criminal Minds in its novelized version. I was so strongly reminded of the show that I could have finished the review with that single sentence above and I would be justified. Just like that show, this book will keep you on the edge of your seat while reading and make you heave a sigh of relief when it’s done.”

Overrated Sensibilities

“High-octane police procedural… In this novel, the sixth in the Brandon Fisher FBI series, the story is complex and intriguing… There is plenty of action, clues to follow, puzzles to be solved, and an interesting explanation behind the crimes… The book is easy to read, a page-turner and difficult to put down… In sum, a solid police procedural novel, well researched and constructed, for those who love complex stories and who don’t mind gory details.”

Just Olga

“This book was fast paced from page one. It had me sucked in and I hated putting it down. It’s number six in a series and is the first book I have read. Even though it was a part of a series, it was easily read as a stand alone. I really enjoyed it and even hope to read more in the future. The characters were real and easy to like, while some were easy to hate. The story was detailed and descriptive and kept me guessing until the end. This book was a great crime mystery.”

Boundless Book Reviews

Words and Peace

“A book that is character driven and [such] a believable plot, you have to wonder if this was based on a real case. It is that real. The author conveys a talent for police procedurals and is able to keep the reader enthralled in the story.

“Like I said, this is the 6th book in the series, and the only one I have read in this series, but it can be read as a stand alone novel. I personally will be going back and reading more of this series. If you love a good police murder mystery, this is an author that you really need to take a look at. I thoroughly enjoyed this book and it was a fast read for me.”

Celticlady’s Reviews

“This is the 6th book in this series but it can be read as a standalone. If you like Bones and/or Criminal Minds, you will LOVE, LOVE, LOVE this book!
