There are some books you write when everything is going according to plan.
And then there are the books that become intertwined with a season of your life you never expected.
Bring Them Home was one of those books for me.
While I was editing this story, I was also dealing with an unexpected situation that changed the rhythm of my everyday life. Suddenly, something as ordinary as sitting down to work wasn't quite so ordinary.
There were days when I simply couldn't.
And when I could return to the manuscript, getting back into the story sometimes took more effort than I anticipated.
And yet, I had a book to finish.
When Life Changes the Way You See a Story
In some ways, that made the editing process harder.
In other ways, it made me look at Bring Them Home differently.
As I worked through Amanda Steele's latest investigation, I became even more aware of the emotions running underneath the story—the uncertainty, the fear of what might happen next, and that feeling of having to keep moving forward even when circumstances aren't entirely within your control.
Those emotions became more meaningful to me because they weren't simply things I was reading on the page. They were feelings I understood in a different way.
There were moments when I wondered whether I was doing the story justice.
But I kept going.
Sometimes You Just Have to Take the Next Step
Perhaps that's why Bring Them Home feels especially personal to me.
Beneath the twists, the investigation, and the suspense is a story about holding on, pushing forward, and refusing to give up when life leads us down unexpected paths.
Amanda is determined to find answers for people who desperately need them. She keeps following the evidence even when the path ahead isn't clear.
And sometimes, that's what we have to do in our own lives, too.
We don't always know what's waiting around the corner.
We don't always have control over what happens next.
Sometimes all we can do is take the next step.
And then the next one.
That's something I've been reminded of while writing this book—and something I hope readers will feel when they read it.
